You may be able to hack the nights under canvas, or having to put up a tent, but for some, toilet facilities are the ‘last bastion of civilisation’, even putting some people off camping altogether.
It’s true that campsite lavatories and wash blocks offer very varied standards of quality and cleanliness. But the dreaded communal facilities, the thought of traipsing across a field to use them, or worse, the prospect of digging your own loo, don’t have to stop you from enjoying the great outdoors.
How They Work
In most camping toilets there are two sections. The upper section looks just the same as a regular toilet, and has a flush water tank. You fill the top section with water and add some chemicals to it for rinsing, and put other chemicals in the lower section to break down the waste matter. A sealing plate divides the lower section from the upper half, keeping nasty smells at bay, and separating off the waste.
Emptying a camping toilet isn’t unpleasant or complicated. Many come with a level indicator which let you know when your loo is full. Simply remove the detachable waste section and take it to the nearest emptying point – many campsites have one.
